Brush fire ignites on Deer Island during Fourth of July celebration in Biloxi

The thousands of people viewing Biloxi’s Fourth of July fireworks show got more than they bargained for Friday night, as a brush fire ignited on Deer Island.

Biloxi Fire Chief Nicholas Geiser confirmed at 9:45 p.m. that multiple units were on the scene or on the way in an attempt to get the fire under control.

“We had our fire boat on the water as a precaution, as this is not an unusual thing to happen with all the fireworks,” Geiser said.

Geiser added that the problem in fighting a fire on Deer Island is getting to Deer Island, though a fire there “can only burn so far,” Geiser said.
