  • Rouses Markets partners with MSU Extension for a free healthy eating tour.
  • Tour teaches label reading, unit pricing, and seasonal produce selection.
  • Participants learn budget planning, meal prep, and cost comparisons for food.

Inflation shot up during COVID-19 and took food prices with it, leaving people concerned about the cost of feeding their families and the additives in their food.

Rouses Markets is partnering with the Mississippi Extension Service to show shoppers how to make healthy choices and save money. The event is at 1 p.m. on June 26 at Rouses Market Gulfport at 1444 E Pass Road.

The free grocery store will take those who sign up on a tour of the grocery departments, teaching them how to pick fresh fruits and vegetables and how to find what’s in season, said Jenna Quave, community wellness planner for MSU Extension.

Some of the other skills that will be taught are how to read labels, compare costs and “how to make a list so that you stay within your budget,” she said.

The course will cover:

How to plan healthy and tasty meals

How canned, frozen and fresh produce compare for cost and nutrition

How to use unit pricing to save money

The benefits of buying in bulk

To sign up, contact Quave at 228-867-6541 or jll364@msstate.edu.

Quave said she has helped shoppers at other Rouses Markets learn how to save money and cook healthy.

She serves Harrison County and said she can present these programs at additional Rouses Markets and other locations in the county.
