Coroner identifies man who died after accidentally driving off end of Biloxi fishing pier
One person died Sunday after he accidentally drove off the edge of the Biloxi fishing pier, authorities said.
Police were called just before 9 p.m. to the pier and found a sedan had driven off the end, said Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer.
He identified the victim as Paul Costello, 67, of Milton, Florida.
Costello died of drowning at the scene, Switzer said.
Switzer said Costello and his family were staying at the Palace Casino nearby. Costello apparently dropped his family off at the front door, left to park their car and drove onto the pier, according to the coroner.
Police are still investigating what caused the accident. Switzer said it was possible Costello, who was unfamiliar with the area, may have thought the pier was a road did not know it ends.
Police later recovered the car, said Jonathan Johnson, a public information officer for Biloxi Police. He said Costello was the only person in the vehicle.
