Driver critically injured when 2-mile-long train hits vehicle in Gulfport, police say
A driver was critically injured at 8:45 a.m. Thursday when a train hit a car at Lewis Avenue in Gulfport, Lt. Jason DuCré of the Gulfport Police Department said.
The driver of the car was taken to a Coast hospital and will be airlifted to another facility.
The preliminary investigation indicates the driver might have been attempting to beat the train through the intersection, DuCré said.
The 2-mile-long train blocked intersections in Gulfport and Long Beach Thursday morning.
“A train can’t stop like a vehicle,” DuCré said. “They can’t just stop on a dime.”
An investigation is ongoing.
