Body discovered in water between MS Coast and Deer Island, Coast Guard says. What we know

Editor’s note: Missing shrimper Richard Kopszywa was identified Tuesday as the person found in the water.

Authorities discovered a body in the water Tuesday morning off the coast of Biloxi, the Coast Guard said.

A paddleboarder discovered the body between Deer Island and Biloxi, said William Winston, an ensign at the Sector Mobile Public Affairs Office. He said local authorities were heading to the scene to identify the person.

It is unclear if the case is related to a search this week for a missing shrimper whose empty boat was found five miles off the coast.

Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer said just after 11 a.m. that he was heading to the scene.

No other details were immediately available.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
