One dead in fatal crash on I-10 near Menge Avenue exit and future Buc-ee’s site
A person has died on I-10 in the construction area near Menge Avenue at the future Buc-ee’s site, Cal Robertson with the Mississippi Highway Patrol said Monday.
The fatality was a person in a vehicle that collided with a tractor trailer, he said. That person has not yet been identified.
Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer said the person is from out of the area.
Law enforcement was on scene directing traffic, according to an alert from Mississippi Department of Transportation that went out at 9:32 a.m. Monday. The incident is expected to cause traffic issues until about noon.
The crash was cleared around 12:30 p.m.
MDOT reported at 10:20 a.m. a separate crash in the westbound lanes of I-10 past Menge Avenue, causing delays on both sides of the highway.
The fatal crash happened near mile marker 23, about a mile west of the construction area. Traffic is moving very slowly, Robertson said, and drivers are encourages to use alternate routes while the accident is cleared.
“It’s in the construction area so it’s already down to one lane,” he said.
After weeks of intermittent lane closures in the westbound lanes of I-10 at exit 24, construction moved to the eastbound lanes Monday morning. The right lane is scheduled to be closed from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday.
The interchange is being rebuilt to accommodate traffic for a Buc-ee’s travel center and other business coming to that area of Harrison County.
