Sonic in downtown Gulfport evacuated as firefighters respond to apparent kitchen fire

An apparent kitchen grease fire Thursday morning caused an evacuation of the Sonic Drive-In restaurant in downtown Gulfport.

At least four Gulfport Fire Department trucks were at the fast food chain at 9:30 a.m. Firefighters could be seen on the roof of the Sonic on 25th Avenue (Highway 49) as smoke billowed out.

Other firefighters were inside the store evaluating the kitchen.

While smoke filled the restaurant and the sky around the store, no flames could be seen from the sidewalk outside of the restaurant. The scene appeared to be mostly contained by 10 a.m.

An employee who was working Thursday morning told the Sun Herald that a kitchen deep fryer caught fire, resulting in the smoke. The employee said no one was injured.

The extent of damage is not yet known and it’s unclear how long Sonic will remain closed.
