Mayor makes his choice for Gulfport’s next police chief. He’s a familiar face.
Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes has decided to elevate the city’s deputy police chief to the top spot in the department, the mayor announced on Friday.
Chris Ryle has worked in the Gulfport Police Department for the last 22 years.
“After a very thorough internal search of some of Gulfport’s most qualified police officers, Chris Ryle has been selected as the next chief of police,” Hewes said in a release. “He brings a strong work ethic, internal knowledge, professional integrity and dedication to serving Gulfport’s residents.”
Ryle’s hiring is pending approval of the Gulfport City Council and his nomination will be placed before the council at its next meeting on Aug. 4.
Ryle is set to replace Leonard Papania, who announced his plans to retire in November.
