A puppy and 2 dogs were trapped in a burning house. A neighbor took action, official says

Firefighters and a Good Samaritan rescued a newborn puppy and two dogs from a Saucier house fire Thursday morning, a Harrison County fire official said.

Harrison County Fire Services and the Gulfport Combat Readiness Training Center responded to a house fire about 9:30 a.m. on Martina Street, said Fire Chief Pat Sullivan.

Seven trucks responded to the call and found heavy smoke coming from a mobile home, Sullivan said.

Firefighters were able to revive the puppy they found inside the home. Sullivan said a neighbor opened the door, went inside and rescued two other dogs before fire crews arrived.

The residents who lived there were not home at the time of the fire, Sullivan said. Firefighters contained the blaze to two rooms.

The neighbor who went into the house to rescue the dogs was treated on scene by American Medical Response and taken to an area hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Sullivan said.
