Hear the voices, experiences of people of color on the Coast in this new Sun Herald series

Hello! My name is Britneé Davis and I’m a digital growth producer at the Sun Herald.

I’m originally from Miami, and I’ve been living and working here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for almost a year now.

What has really helped me adjust to life on the Coast was getting involved at my church and joining Facebook groups for people of color on the Coast, like the Black Owned Businesses- MS Gulf Coast group.

Through those avenues, I’ve met some amazing people and I feel like I’m finally getting to know my new community.

One thing that I’ve noticed through those interactions is that there’s a lot diversity on the Coast and communities of color are thriving here.

But as a black woman and a journalist, I know that often times those positive, inspiring stories are overshadowed by crime stories.

So I wanted to create something to allow people of color to share their stories, journeys, successes, challenges and testimonies. The stories that don’t normally make the news.

That’s how Color on the Coast was born.

What is Color on the Coast?

COTC is a digital video series that will run on our Instagram (@SunHeraldBiloxi) and YouTube (Sun Herald) pages starting in January, so make sure you’re following us.

Our first episode drops on Jan. 10. New episodes will tentatively publish every other Friday.

Every story will feature people of color, including African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Latino Americans and many other groups.

You don’t have to be a business owner or a popular name on the Coast. I’m looking for teens, adults, millennials, business owners, seniors and everyone in between!

I want to talk with people who will be honest about their journey as a person of color on the Coast. People who are comfortable with being transparent and real while they’re on camera.

If you’re interested in being a part of this project, email me at bdavis@mcclatchy.com and tell me a little about yourself for consideration to be featured on an episode.

You can also email me if you have any questions.
