A 23-year-old woman died after being ejected from the overturning vehicle she was driving in D’Iberville, an official said.

Ileen Lopez, of D’Iberville, lost control of a Mazda Tribute about 2:40 a.m. Sunday on Mississippi 15 south of Lamey Bridge Road, Harrison County Chief Deputy Coroner Brian Switzer said.

The sport utility vehicle was northbound as it left Mississippi 67 and exited to Mississippi 15, Switzer said.

Lopez was unrestrained and was thrown from the SUV, which flipped several times, he said.

She was taken to Merit Health Biloxi, where she died.

Switzer said the SUV caught fire after the crash.

Her passenger also was taken to the hospital. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, Switzer said.

A toxicology test was being performed on Lopez, as is standard procedure after a fatal crash.
