An 80-year-old woman missing for more than a week after a casino visit in Gulfport was found safe in Wiggins and taken to a Hattiesburg hospital, officials said.
Betty Burnside Boutwell, of Meridian, was last seen Oct. 25 at the Island View Casino Resort. She was found Thursday after the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation issued a Silver Alert.
Boutwell suffers from a medical condition that can impair her judgment, officials said.
She had been driving a Ford Taurus.
Someone in Wiggins recognized her car from the Silver Alert description and notified authorities, said Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun of the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities found Boutwell in her car and took her to a hospital for treatment.
Wiggins is about 35 miles north of Gulfport.
A Silver Alert is a public notification system used nationwide to help find missing persons who suffer from any type of mental disability, to include Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The alert is issued at the request of a local law enforcement agency for people who meet the criteria, regardless of the circumstances of their disappearance.
