Two Coast Guard members were evacuated from Coast Guard Cutter Brant early Wednesday after reporting a fire on the vessel.

The Coast Guard members noticed a fire in the port-aft area of the vessel about 5 a.m. and used an on-board fire extinguisher before help arrived, Cmdr. Zachary Ford said in a news release.

The boat was secured in Gulfport, Ford said.

Members of the Gulfport Fire Department reached the boat about 5:05 a.m. and put out the fire with a Coast Guard member’s help, he said.

The two who were rescued were evaluated by emergency medical officers and were released, Ford said.

“We are thankful no one was hurt in the fire,” said Ford, who leads the response department at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans.

“Without the quick response and actions taken by the Gulfport Fire Department, this incident could have been much worse.”

Ford said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Coast Guard Station Gulfport is just off the Mississippi Sound south of 23rd Avenue in Gulfport.
