A Tuesday morning accident temporarily left hundreds of Mississippi Power customers without power.
Police Chief Tim Hendricks said an 18-wheeler carrying a large concrete pylon was attempting to turn north on Henderson Avenue near North Street.
“The truck turned too wide and it hit a utility pole in the process,” Hendricks said. “No one was injured, but the pole was live and we couldn’t get the driver out until the power to the pole was shut off.”
Crews from Mississippi Power in Gulfport arrived on the scene. About 985 people were without power while the drive was removed and the pole was restored.
Hendricks said the power was going to be shut off for about an hour at nearby Pass Christian High School, but the school did not lose power.
