HANCOCK COUNTY -- Hancock County Coroner Jim Faulk said three people died from a four-car wreck on Interstate 10 near the Louisiana line Monday night.
Faulk said two people died in the wreck, which happened just after 9 p.m. in the westbound lane of I-10 near the 2-mile marker.
"The third person died at University Medical Center in New Orleans," he said. "The two people that died on scene were in the front seat of the car and they were wearing their seat belts. The other three were ejected from the vehicle."
Faulk is not releasing the names of those killed until their families have been notified.
"The people that were killed were in a passenger car that was behind an 18-wheeler and were in front of another 18-wheeeler in the right lane of westbound I-10 because the left lane was closed due to construction," Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Chase Elkins said. "The 18-wheeler hit the car from behind and it crashed into the 18-wheeler and then another car hit the car."
Elkins said four people were injured, and two remain in critical condition.
He said the portion of I-10 near the state line was shut down for about six hours.
The accident is under investigation.
