Hancock deputy recovering after one-car accident
HANCOCK COUNTY -- A deputy with the Hancock County Sheriff's Office is recovering at home after a single-vehicle accident on Kiln Waveland-Cutoff Road Friday night.
Hancock County Chief Deputy Don Bass told the Sun Herald Saturday that Lt. William Reed was taken to Memorial Hospital at Gulfport on Friday night after the Jaws of Life were used to remove him from his patrol car.
The accident happened around 7:15 p.m. Bass said he believes the wreck was weather-related.
"Lt. Reed was going to a call when he hit a curve on Kiln Waveland-Cutoff Road and hydroplaned into a ditch," he said. "We had a lot of nasty weather Friday, so he probably hit a slick spot and lost control of the car in that curve."
Bass said he received a text from Reed on Saturday morning that said he had been released from the hospital.
"He said he's sore but he's at home," Bass said. "He kept going in and out of consciousness Friday night and it scared us. But he's hard-headed and he made it."
