This is where to set your thermostat in MS to save the most money in cold winter weather
As temperatures across the state continue to drop, some Mississippians could see a hike in energy costs.
Several cities across the state — including Biloxi — are expected to see the first frost of the season in the coming weeks and into December, McClatchy Media reported.
But there are a few easy things residents can do to save money on energy bills, according to experts.
“You can save money on your heating and cooling bills by simply resetting your thermostat when you are asleep or away from home,” officials at the United States Department of Energy said.
Here’s what to know about resetting your thermostat and other tips on how to stay warm and cut energy costs as the winter weather approaches.
What is the most cost-effective thermostat setting during winter?
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, setting your thermostat back by about 7 to 10 degrees from its normal setting for at least 8 hours a day can help lower energy costs.
Thermostats should be set between 68 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit during waking hours and lowered later or while away from the house, officials said.
Mississippians especially could benefit from this simple move, as the percentage of savings from doing so tends to be more for buildings in milder climates, according to officials.
Experts at Mississippi Power said energy use increases by 3 to 5% for each degree higher the thermostat is set at during the winter.
Other ways to save energy in the winter
Here are some additional tips for saving energy in the winter, according to the U.S. Department of Energy:
- Take advantage of heat from natural sunlight
- Cover drafty windows
- Find and seal air leaks
- Maintain your heating systems with routine service
- Reduce heat loss from the fireplace by keeping your damper closed when not in use
- Lower water heating costs by keeping the water heater on 120 degrees Fahrenheit
Payment assistance for energy costs
There are options for certain Mississippians struggling to pay for energy costs. Here’s what you can do if you need assistance paying for energy costs, according to Mississippi Power:
- Mississippi Power’s Project SHARE: for older adults and people with disabilities that are Mississippi Power customers in need of assistance
- Supplemental Security Income: a federal income maintenance program for older adults and people with disabilities administered through the Social Security Administration
- Temporary Aid to Needy Families: a federal income maintenance program for low-income families administered by the Mississippi Department of Human Services
- Mississippi Power’s Bill Extender program: allows customers an extended payment due date
- Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program: a federally-funded program that helps qualified low-income houses with their energy bills
