Drivers on Interstate 10 near the site of the future Buc-ee’s in Pass Christian can expect traffic congestion for hours on Wednesday.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation said at 10:30 a.m. that traffic delays are expected for more than three hours on all lanes of I-10 between Exits 20 and 28, spanning from Pass Christian to Long Beach.

The congestion lasted for hours beyond the initial MDOT alert, with westbound traffic backing up all the way to the Kiln/Bay St. Louis exit (13) in Hancock County on Wednesday afternoon.

The delays were expected until about 8 p.m.

Congestion continues, however, as Wednesday is the first day of an I-10 widening project at the Menge Avenue exit (24) as part of the Buc-ee’s development plan.

The left eastbound and westbound lanes are closed at the Menge Avenue exit.

Drivers should take caution and be prepared to stop, MDOT says.

Over the weekend, an RV veered off the interstate and into the woods, also near the Menge Avenue exit, killing a Slidell man. Traffic was backed up to the Louisiana border for hours.

Check MDOT’s traffic map and cameras for the latest information.
