Tragedy struck a Harrison County family months before their patriarch went missing in a helicopter crash over the Gulf of Mexico.
David and Lacy Scarborough of the Lizana community lost their 2-year-old son, Sawyer, to a drowning in March, Lacy told the Sun Herald on Thursday.
David Scarborough was aboard a helicopter leaving an oil platform when it went down Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. Coast Guard reported. He is one of four people who are reported missing.
The 36-year-old husband and father worked for Island Operating Company based in the Lafayette area and had just received a promotion, Lacy told the Sun Herald.
“He enjoyed his job and his co-workers,” she said.
The chopper went down about 10 miles off Southwest Pass, Louisiana, and the Coast Guard is searching for the four who are missing.
Lacy and her family are praying for a miracle. Hundreds of people from Hancock and Harrison counties are asking the Coast to lift the family up in prayer as officials search for David.
The Scarboroughs are expecting a second son due in April, Lacy said, and the couple was going to celebrate Christmas together upon David’s return.
Family and friends are with Lacy at her home while she waits for updates. The Coast Guard’s Heartland Division is leading the search.
