‘Step out on faith.’ How Coast man went from prison to new business owner

This is Color on the Coast, a series created to share the journeys, experiences, successes and challenges of people of color on the Coast. You can find episodes on our Instagram (@SunHeraldBiloxi) and YouTube (Sun Herald) pages.

Seven years ago, David Pittman had no idea he’d own his own business.

In 2013, the St. Martin entrepreneur was just getting out of prison and looking for a job the help get him on his feet.

But he soon learned that finding work would be a challenge.

“When you are a felon, ... there are companies that just won’t hire,” Pittman said. “Especially here in Mississippi.”

After three years of rejection, Pittman turned to YouTube to look for a way to make money. That’s where he learned about photography and video.

Now, David owns DP Photography on Lemoyne Blvd.

“I think many blacks want to be bold, but they’re just afraid,” he said. “We have to understand stand how this system works and know that we don’t have to be afraid to step out on faith.”
