Mississippi has its smallest Thursday COVID-19 report since June

Mississippi’s state health department announced 585 new cases of COVID-19 and 26 additional deaths on Thursday — a significant drop in positive cases.

Reports on Thursday typically produce one of the higher COVID-19 counts of the week, but this Thursday’s numbers were the smallest on the day since 381 were reported on June 18.

The seven-day average for new cases has dipped to 749.43 — the lowest mark since Aug. 19.

Of the 26 new deaths reported, none took place in the state’s southernmost six counties.

There were 46 new cases reported in South Mississippi — the third smallest amount of August.

Only 18 new cases were reported in Jackson County and that coincided with Singing River Health System’s announcement that it had its lowest 7-day rolling average of positive outpatient tests in a while at 39.5. COVID-19 hospitalizations are also down in the Singing River system at 20.

As of Aug. 25, there were 730 people hospitalized with the coronavirus in Mississippi. There were 232 people in intensive care units and 119 on ventilators.
