Mississippi reports 125 coronavirus deaths in 2 days, a new high. Coast has 9 new.
A review of a month’s worth of death certificates has produced a significant bump in COVID-19 fatalities on the Coast and across Mississippi.
The State Department of Health reported 58 deaths on Wednesday, a day after reporting 67. MSDH reported the daily numbers Wednesday afternoon after a delay.
Forty-four of the deaths reported on Wednesday are the result of a review of death certificates from July 21-Aug. 18.
All nine deaths reported on Wednesday for the Coast were from July 21-Aug. 18, with five in Harrison County, two in Jackson County and two in Pearl River County.
The nine deaths reported Wednesday were the most for the state’s southernmost six counties this year.
There were 904 new cases of the coronavirus reported on Wednesday, including 127 in South Mississippi.
Hospitalization numbers continue to show positive signs after peaking in July.
After hospitalized patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19 reached near 1,000 in July, that number is now down to 730 — the lowest mark of August. There were also 148 people in hospitals with suspected cases.
The number of COVID-19 patients on ventilators also reached a new low for August at 119.
There have been 80,110 cases of COVID-19 and 2,373 deaths in Mississippi this year.
