Mississippi tops 70,000 COVID-19 cases, South Mississippi over 7,000

Mississippi topped 70,000 cases of the coronavirus Friday and South Mississippi went over 7,000.

The health department reported these milestone numbers as new cases climbed back up to 944 from 612 on Thursday.

The state had 32 more deaths reported Friday, none of them in South Mississippi.

There were 115 new cases in the six southern counties Friday.

The seven-day average for South Mississippi cases that got to an August low of 102 on Thursday inched back up Friday with an average of 105 new cases every day for the last week. It’s still well down from the seven-day average of 173 on Aug. 1.

Mississippi now has 70,930 cases and 2,043 deaths.

South Mississippi has 7,004 total cases and 153 deaths, with 46 of the deaths in long term care facilities in South Mississippi.

A month ago on July 14, Mississippi hit a record of 805 people hospitalized with the coronavirus and 227 people in intensive care. There were 126 patients on ventilators that day.

The health department reported Friday that 946 patients were hospitalized with coronavirus, 312 in ICU and 179 on ventilators, all of which are below record highs.

Presumed recoveries statewide are 49,836 as of Aug. 9.

Hancock — 419 (5 new)

Harrison — 2,710 (47 new)

Jackson — 2,430 (19 new)

Pearl River — 584 (13 new)

Stone — 235 (10 new)
