A new high set for hospitalizations as 800+ new COVID-19 cases reported in MS

Gov. Tate Reeves said Monday that Mississippi is in the middle of a COVID-19 spike, and Tuesday’s numbers release by the health department shows hospitalizations are still on the increase while new cases increased by more than 800.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 862 new coronavirus cases and 23 deaths on Tuesday.

For the second straight day, Mississippi reached a new high in hospitalizations. The state reported 805 hospitalized patients with confirmed cases and 254 with suspected cases, bringing the total to 1,059 — 39 more than the previous day.

The last 10 days have seen a marked increase in hospitalizations, going from 789 on July 4.

The state set a new record in COVID-19 patients in intensive care at 227 — a single-day increase of 19.

Also, there were 126 patients on ventilators as of Monday. That a single-day jump of 16 — by far the biggest single-day increase over the last 20 days.

Harrison County continues to lead the Coast in new infections with 48 new cases reported Tuesday, bringing its total to 1,231.

There were no new deaths reported in the state’s southernmost six counties on Tuesday.

The state has reported 37,542 cases of COVID-19 with 1,272 deaths.
