Nearly 10% of MS COVID-19 cases Thursday are in Harrison County. Coast sees 1 death.
The seven-day average for new COVID-19 cases in Mississippi dipped below 1,000 for the first time since July 19 after the state health department released its daily report on Thursday.
With 956 new cases and with 21 deaths, the state now has 64,400 cases and 1,825 deaths for the year.
The seven-day average for new cases in Mississippi now stands at 974.43.
Following a run of five consecutive 1,000-plus case days, Mississippi has fallen short of that mark in three of the last five days.
Harrison County led the Coast in new cases with 91 in Thursday’s numbers, giving it the most cases in South Mississippi for the year at 2,378.
The lone death reported in South Mississippi on Thursday was in Jackson County, which continues to have the most deaths in the state’s southernmost counties at 43. The region has accounted for 135 of the state’s 1,825 deaths this year.
The state did not immediately release new hospitalization figures on Thursday. As of Tuesday, there were 970 people hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19. Another 209 were hospitalized with suspected cases.
The 192 patients on ventilators tied the previous high mark from three days prior. The number of patients in intensive care with the coronavirus reached an all-time high of 329.
