MS reports 3rd straight day of 1,000 COVID-19 cases. Harrison Co., Coast set new marks.

Mississippi’s state health department reported Friday over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases for the third consecutive day, and South Mississippi set a new single-day record on back-to-back days.

The state reported 1,032 new coronavirus cases overall, including 135 in the state’s southernmost six counties. The seven-day average in South Mississippi is now at an all-time high of 86.71.

The 24 deaths reported statewide on Friday were the most since there were 30 announced on July 8.

Harrison County, which reported its 18 death of the year, had its biggest single-day caseload ever with 65, bringing its total to 1,370.

George County also set a new high mark with 15 cases.

Statewide hospitalization numbers dropped slightly for the first time since July 10. After the state reported a new high of 1,099 on Thursday, that number dropped to 1,076 in Friday’s numbers.

One area of concern is that patients in intensive care climbed to a new high of 253 as of Thursday — a bump of 56 over the course of six days.

The number of patients on ventilators stood at 129 — the second-highest total this year.

There have been 40,829 COVID-19 cases and 1,332 deaths in Mississippi.

The number of presumed recoveries stood at 25,932 as of July 12.
