More than 1,200 new COVID-19 cases reported in MS, the most ever in 1 day
Mississippi’s state health department announced the biggest single-day total of new COVID-19 cases with 1,230 on Thursday, including a new record of 120 cases in South Mississippi.
Jackson County had the most new cases of the state’s southernmost six counties with 46. Harrison County, which has 1,305 total, had 45.
George County, which has 140 confirmed cases, had eight new cases on Thursday. The county has more than tripled its COVID-19 numbers in the last month. The county had 40 reported cases on June 16.
The announcement of 1,230 cases topped the previous high of 1,092 from June 25, pushing the seven-day average to 886.57.
The state announced an additional 18 deaths Saturday, bringing the three-day total to 58.
Thursday’s numbers marked the first time that Mississippi has announced consecutive days of 1,000-plus case totals.
Hospitalization numbers also set new records on Thursday with 855 patients with confirmed cases in hospitals. There were another 262 with suspected cases, bringing the total in hospitals to 1,117.
The number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care set a new high mark at 245. The total of patients requiring ventilators dropped seven to 125 in Thursday’s numbers.
