Mississippi reports 1,000+ COVID-19 cases for 3rd time and 3 new deaths on the Coast

Mississippi’s state health department announced over 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 for the third time on Wednesday and hospitalization numbers set records for a third consecutive day.

The state announced 1,025 new cases — the third highest single-day number — and 18 deaths, including three in Coastal counties.

Jackson, Harrison and Hancock counties each announced a single death. It’s the first time there have been more than two deaths on the Coast since three deaths were announced on June 17. Of the 1,290 coronavirus deaths reported by the state, 88 were in the state’s southernmost six counties.

The state also announced that there were 825 people hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday. There were another 274 hospitalized with suspected cases, bringing the total to a new state record of 1,099.

The number of hospitalized patients has increased by 62.6 percent since 676 were announced on June 27.

The number of patients in intensive care, 240, and on ventilators, 132, also set new single-day highs in the numbers released on Wednesday.

There have been 38,567 cases of coronavirus reported in Mississippi since numbers were first reported on March 11.

As of July 12, there had been 25,932 people presumed to have recovered from COVID-19.
