Mississippi sets new record for number of COVID patients on ventilators, in hospitals

Mississippi reported new highs in hospitalizations and patients on ventilators with the new COVID-19 data released by the state’s department of health on Monday.

For the first time, the number of people hospitalized with confirmed or suspected cases of the coronavirus cleared 1,000. There were 758 patients with confirmed cases and 262 suspected cases, bringing the total to 1,020.

That’s a 53.6% increase over the 664 total reported on June 23.

The number of COVID-19 patients on ventilators climbed to a high of 110.

MSDH on Monday announced 393 new coronavirus cases statewide and one death, the lowest daily increase in a week.

It marked the second consecutive Monday that the case and death numbers have taken a significant dip. On July 7, the state announced 357 cases and three deaths.

But the state’s seven-day average, now at 774.71 cases, is nearing the record-setting week in late June that had two days of 1,000-plus cases reported, including the five-day total reported June 22.

Hinds County leads the state in reported cases over the last week with 279. Harrison County ranks fourth at 109 and Jackson County stands in 10th place at 50.

There have been 25,932 presumed coronavirus recoveries since the state state first started reporting numbers on March 11.

Of the 1,250 deaths reported since March 11 in Mississippi, 604 have been in long-term care facilities. There have been 36,680 reported cases.

Total cases in South Mississippi counties are:

George — 125 (2 new)

Hancock —152 (4 new)

Harrison — 1,183 (6 new)

Jackson — 804 (6 new)

Pearl River —308 (5 new)

Stone — 77 (0 new)
