Biloxi temporarily closes City Hall after employee tests positive for coronavirus
Doors to Biloxi City Hall are closed Monday after an employee tested positive for the coronavirus.
The city announced the closure at noon Monday and said city hall will reopen to the public Tuesday morning after the three story building is sanitized.
The person who tested positive Monday works at city hall, and the administration, staff and city council members were notified. Those who came into contact with the employee are being tested or are self-monitoring for symptoms.
A public city council meeting was held in the building on June 23.
“This is another example of how this virus spreads so quickly,” Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich said. “We are taking all the necessary steps to make sure everyone is aware of this.”
This is the first person who works at city hall to have the coronavirus, according to a city press release, and the second time a city employee has tested positive since nearly a dozen Biloxi firefighters tested positive in late March.
“With more than 600 employees, less than a dozen have contracted the virus,” Gilich said. “This shows that employees are taking this seriously.”
Harrison County had the second highest cases of coronavirus in the state in the last week, with 114 new cases and 688 total.
