Mississippi has second-highest COVID-19 increase with 489 new cases, 23 deaths

After nine days with no new deaths, South Mississippi’s longest streak since the coronavirus began, 3 more deaths have been added to the total today.

Mississippi State Department of Health reported today 23 additional deaths, 16 of them from review of death certificates between May 23 and June 11 and 3 of those from South Mississippi. One death each was reported in Hancock, Pearl River and Stone counties, for a total of 71.

This was the first reported death in Stone County.

Harrison County continues to see the biggest increase in cases in South Mississippi, and for the first time has surpassed the total number of cases in Jackson County, which was a hot spot early on in the pandemic.

Today also was the second-highest number of new cases statewide since the pandemic began, with an increase of 489 COVID-19 cases, second only to the 498 cases reported June 8.

Mississippi has a total of 20,641 cases and 938 deaths. Presumed recoveries through June 14 is 15,323.

South Mississippi’s lower six counties have 1,178 cases with the seven-day average back above 20 cases a day, which is the highest since April 20.

Total cases by county are:

George — 41 (1 new)

Hancock — 100 (0 new for four days)

Harrison — 393 (16 new)

Jackson — 385 (7 new)

Pearl River — 224 (1 new)

Stone — 35 (1 new)
