Three teams from Mississippi schools competed last week against teams from across the country in the National Transportation and Civil Engineering Bridge Building Challenge at the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials Spring Meeting in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Master Bridge Builders team from Long Beach Middle School won second place in the seventh- and eighth-grade division, and the Elite Bridges team from Guntown Middle School placed third. The Tupelo High School Team 1 team placed second in the ninth- and 10th-grade division.
Mississippi Department of Transportation provided each team with a TRAC Challenge Entry Kit, materials and guidelines to build a bridge. Each team submitted a portfolio with their bridge design, a PowerPoint presentation and the strength-to-weight ratio of the bridge.
