Newk's raising $100K for ovarian cancer research
Newk's Eatery is celebrating this week's opening of its 100th restaurant in Lake Charles, La., by raising $100,000 for ovarian cancer research.
Each of the 100 Newk's restaurants is committed to raising $1,000, inviting diners to join the search for a cure by adding a dollar or more to their purchases at the register.
The $100,000 will be donated to Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance. The campaign is an outgrowth of Newk's year-round ovarian cancer awareness movement, Newk's Cares, which has raised more than $280,000 in two years. Inspired by the personal cancer battle of Lori Newcomb, wife of Newk's Eatery's CEO and co-founder Chris Newcomb, Newk's Cares is donating 10 cents from every water bottle sold at Newk's restaurants to the alliance.
"We've got a great deal of passion for ovarian cancer awareness and research that's now amplified a hundredfold as we work together system-wide to turn small coin into big change," Chris Newcomb said.
