Electronic tax returns are on track in Mississippi
More than 150 million tax returns are expected to be filed this year, and as of Feb. 26, the IRS received more than 58 million individual tax returns and issued more than 46 million refunds.
The average refund is $3,053.
"In Mississippi we estimate receiving 1.4 million total tax returns with 1.1 million filing electronically with the IRS this year," said IRS Spokesman Mark Green. "As of Feb. 29, we have received 650,000 electronic filed tax returns from Mississippi, which is an increase compared to last year."
People have extra days to file their tax returns this year. Taxpayers have until Monday, April 18, to file their 2015 tax returns and pay any tax due because of the Emancipation Day holiday in Washington, D.C., which falls on April 15.
More than four out of five returns are expected to be filed electronically, with a similar proportion of refunds issued through direct deposit.
The IRS Free File program is available at IRS.gov. Commercial partners of the IRS offer free brand-name software to about 100 million individuals and families with incomes of $62,000 or less. Seventy percent of the nation's taxpayers are eligible for IRS Free File.
