Newk's raises $150K for ovarian cancer research

Newk's Eatery raised more than $150,000 for research through "Newk's Cares," the restaurant's ovarian cancer awareness campaign.

This is the second year of the campaign, which has now raised more than $280,000.

Newk's restaurants in Gulfport and D'Iberville are part of the fundraising efforts. Newk's sold teal-colored cups in honor of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and all year, 10 cents from each purchase of a Newk's Cares water bottle is donated to further global search for a cure.

Newk's Eatery CEO Chris Newcomb and his wife Lori, whose personal battle with the disease began in 2013, inspired the Newk's Cares mission to generate greater community awareness of the disease and its symptoms.

Each year, 200,000 women worldwide are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Only 45 percent of women survive longer than five years, although with early detection and treatment this rate increases to more than 92 percent.
