Tesla Finally Has An FSD Update For Older Cars
Full Self-Driving Lite
When Tesla made its self-driving promise years ago, many people bought into it. Over 10 years down the line, and we're still not seeing the full dream realized, especially for the early adopters. The company promised its customers that full self-driving (FSD) would also be made available for older cars, but as things have panned out, Tesla owners are still unhappy.
In fact, the company has been sued in a class action alleging that Tesla was deceptive in its marketing practices. Tack on the fact that FSD has led to some accidents, which were unfortunately fatal.
Now, however, Tesla's preparing to make good on its promise, somewhat, by updating the AI3 chip in older cars with the Full Self Driving V14 "lite" suite.
FSD v14 Lite is now rolling out to AI3 early-access customers. Based on the feedback, will rollout to more customers over the next few weeks.

Rollout Coming Very Soon
According to Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's Head of AI, the company will roll out the update for the AI3 chip on Tesla vehicles very soon. Over the next few weeks, customers can expect a "Lite" version of the self-driving suite to be available for their older cars equipped with the AI3 chip.
The update brings over the driving behavior of the company's AI4 v14 series into the AI3-equipped vehicles. It also brings other updates, such as Start Self-Driving from Park, Arrival and Parking options, and Speed Profiles.
Is It Enough?
While this is good news for AI3 chip-equipped cars, is it too little too late? Earlier this year, Elon Musk stated on the Q1 Earnings Call that the AI3-equipped and older vehicles would not be able to achieve unsupervised FSD, citing the hardware's inability to do so.
After this, Tesla owners were noticeably disappointed, with some even filing a class-action lawsuit because Tesla made many promises early on that it hasn't been able to keep. The result is the aforementioned lawsuit, discounts, and an upgrade package to a new AI4 or AI5 car.
The question is, will AI3 V14 Lite be enough to satiate a portion of that disgruntled user base? AI1- and AI2-equipped vehicles won't even get the Lite version, and that's still a good portion of Tesla owners.
