Leaked: Hyundai's New i20 Looks More Like A Small SUV Than A Hatchback
Hyundai has spent the last few years reinventing itself with increasingly bold designs, from its growing N performance range to striking EVs like the China-only Ioniq V fastback. That said, it's continued to cater to mainstream buyers with affordable hatchbacks and family-friendly crossovers. Now, leaked images suggest the next-generation Hyundai i20 could be moving closer to the latter camp.
The i20 Grows Up
Fresh images of the fourth-generation i20 have surfaced online ahead of its official debut, revealing a dramatically different look. Hyundai, an official sponsor of FIFA 2026, appears to have given the public an early glimpse of the new model through promotional material linked to the tournament. While the current i20 remains a conventional hatchback, its successor appears to blur the line between hatchback and crossover. The new model adopts a taller stance and chunky black body cladding, reminiscent of the Kona. Up front, slim headlights are connected by a full-width light bar, while the rear receives a similar treatment with taillights stretching across the tailgate, as on the Elantra.
A More Spacious, Modern Cabin
Leaked interior images show a completely redesigned dashboard dominated by a wide curved display that joins the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. Despite the added technology, the cabin appears more restrained than Hyundai's futuristic electric models, such as the Ioniq 3. Fortunately, physical controls remain. Although Hyundai has not released any dimensions, the taller roofline could improve headroom and practicality. Images of the cargo area also suggest there may be more usable luggage space than before.
Hybrid Power Could Be On The Cards
Hyundai has yet to reveal any technical details, but familiar four-cylinder petrol engines are expected to remain available in key markets. With the company's hybrid sales continuing to grow, there is also a reasonable chance the next-generation i20 could gain a full-hybrid option rather than relying solely on mild-hybrid technology. The i20 is currently sold in several markets around the world, most notably India and Europe, while remaining a familiar sight on South African roads. Considering Hyundai's sales success in the US, there is a chance the next-gen i20 may come to the US. Whether Hyundai fans embrace the change remains to be seen, but it appears Hyundai is determined to evolve the i20 beyond its traditional city-hatchback roots.
