The buzz that a third Academy Sports + Outdoors store is opening in South Mississippi is real.

A $2.4 million building permit was issued in Jackson County to transform the former Big Lots at 4201 Denny Ave. into one of the most popular sports stores in the country.

The owner of the store is RCG Ventures in Atlanta and Stellar Contracting in Atlanta is overseeing the renovations.

The site is close to Walmart Supercenter and just east of Lowe’s and several national chain stores that opened in the last few years on the U.S. 90 strip in Pascagoula, such as Ollie’s, Burlington and Aldi.

Two other Academy stores in South Mississippi are in Gulfport and D’Iberville and eight more are located throughout the state.

Academy Sports has more than 300 stores across 21 states, according to its website, and is headquartered in Katy, Texas, near Houston.

The inventory covers a much larger range of sports than many of the big box athletic stores. Shoppers can find equipment for basketball, baseball, golf and other sports, fishing gear, bicycles, toys, camping equipment, barbecue grills and accessories, guns and ammunition, swimming pools and a big selection of athletic wear, sports shoes and work boots.
