For context, a Honda Accord at 33 mpg costs about 9.6 cents per mile. A Toyota Camry at 32 mpg costs about 9.9 cents per mile. A midsize SUV like the RAV4 at 30 mpg costs about 10.6 cents per mile. The Prius saves $490 to $610 per year in fuel compared to a conventional family sedan, and $590 to $680 compared to a compact SUV. Over five years, that's roughly $2,500 to $3,400 in avoided fuel costs compared to its closest rivals.

The standard Prius rolls on 195/60R17 tires in LE trim and 225/45R18 rubber in XLE and XSE configurations. The 18-inch tires on the sportier trims are a bit pricier to replace, but we're not talking Cybertruck territory here. A full set of quality 17-inch replacement tires runs $400 to $550 installed. The 18-inch setup will cost $550 to $750, depending on the brand.
Because the Prius is light at around 3,300 pounds and doesn't produce torque-shredding acceleration, its tires last longer. Most owners report 40,000 to 50,000 miles per set. Over 67,500 miles (five years), you're looking at one to two full replacements, or roughly $600 to $1,200 in tire costs total, which pencils out to about 1 cent per mile.
Maintenance: the genuine advantage
This is where the Prius case gets strongest. Toyota estimates average maintenance costs of $292 per year for the Prius over the first five years, based on ToyotaCare and industry data. CarEdge puts the five-year maintenance total at around $1,460. RepairPal rates Prius reliability as above average with an annual repair cost of roughly $408, which includes both scheduled and unscheduled work.
The hybrid system genuinely reduces wear and cost in meaningful ways. Regenerative braking does the heavy lifting in most everyday stops, which means brake pads last considerably longer than on conventional cars. 50,000 to 80,000 miles on a set of pads is not unusual. There is no conventional 12-volt alternator. No traditional starter motor. The spark plugs are platinum-tipped iridium units that Toyota recommends replacing at 120,000 miles.

Insurance: the one number that might surprise you
The Prius is not expensive to insure. Full coverage on a 2025 Prius XLE runs approximately $1,520 to $1,820 per year for a 40-year-old driver with a clean record and good credit, based on aggregated rate data from Insurify and MoneyGeek. That works out to roughly $127 to $152 per month.
Insurers like the Prius because it attracts low-risk drivers statistically, has a long history of predictable claim patterns, and uses conventional body panels that shops know how to repair. There's no stainless exoskeleton drama here. Parts are widely available, labor is standard, and Toyota's safety ratings are consistently strong. The 2025 Prius earned a Top Safety Pick Plus designation from the IIHS.
Financing, taxes, and registration
For a buyer who puts 10% down on a $33,450 Prius and finances the rest at the current average new car loan rate of around 7.1% over 60 months, the monthly payment comes to approximately $595. Over five years, total interest paid runs about $5,230.
Add title fees, state taxes (variable, but averaging around $1,200 to $2,000 depending on state), and annual registration ($75 to $250), and you're looking at roughly $8 to $12 cents per mile in financing and administrative costs, assuming a financed purchase at current rates.
The full picture: what a mile actually costs
Total true cost of ownership: approximately 58 cents per mile. Over five years and 67,500 miles, that's a total cost of roughly $39,150, including the down payment and all running costs.
How does that compare?
A Honda Accord Sport at a similar transaction price of $32,500, same financing terms, with 33 mpg real-world mileage and slightly higher insurance rates, comes out to approximately 62 to 65 cents per mile over five years. A Toyota Camry Hybrid, the Prius's closest sibling, runs almost identically to the Prius in total cost because its fuel savings are slightly lower but its resale tends to edge ahead. The RAV4 Hybrid, which many buyers consider alongside the Prius, comes out to 70 to 75 cents per mile because of a higher purchase price, worse fuel economy, and slightly higher insurance.
The Prius wins. It doesn't win by a staggering margin against the Camry Hybrid, but against conventional sedans, especially compact SUVs, the economics are real and cumulative.
The honest verdict
The Prius is genuinely one of the most cost-efficient new cars available in America. Its fuel savings are real, its maintenance costs are low, its reliability record is exceptional, and its resale value is consistent. The 58-cents-per-mile total cost of ownership compares favorably against nearly every other vehicle in its class. Against compact SUVs that buyers cross-shop against it, the five-year savings can reach $7,000 to $10,000.
