Former Sun Herald building in Gulfport has a new owner. Here’s what we know about the sale
The former Sun Herald building at 205 DeBuys Road in Gulfport, where the newspaper was published for 50 years, has a new owner.
Coast businessman Rick Camarena purchased the building and said he doesn’t yet have plans for the property, but the building will be demolished.
The building north of the beach and railroad tracks has been vacant since the Sun Herald office moved during the pandemic in 2020.
The property was owned by Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., a U.S. Government Agency and includes a 79,600-square-foot building. The lot is 18.3 acres, with 10.4 acres undeveloped, according to Southeast Commercial Real Estate, the listing agent.
It was listed for $1.69 million, and the purchase price was not disclosed.
“The Sun Herald was a fixture on DeBuys Road for almost 50 years,” said Blake Kaplan, Sun Herald executive editor, when the building closed.
“In this building, we brought you Pulitzer-prize winning coverage of Hurricane Katrina and so many more big stories,” he said.
Camarena, who is a retired Los Angeles firefighter, owns several properties in South Mississippi. He is part of the ownership group with Rob Stinson, owner of The Reef restaurant, transforming the former Kingjaks restaurant on the beach in Biloxi into a beachside wedding venue.
