Two popular restaurants, both open for decades, are now for sale in this MS Coast city
Two Stone County icons may not be around much longer. Downtown Wiggins restaurants Frosty Mug and Whistle Stop Cafe are up for sale.
Betsy Rowell, executive director of the Stone County Economic Development Partnership, said she was sure both businesses would be snapped up and upgraded by new blood. Each have had multiple owners.
“I don’t think it’s unusual, particularly for a family-owned business like the Whistle Stop,” she said. “The Frosty Mug has been around for decades and has changed hands before. ”
There’s still hope you’ll find fried green tomatoes and banana splits after the Magnolia Drive properties change owners. Each owner has offered to sell the businesses with the properties.
The Frosty Mug
For $349,000, the Frosty Mug could be yours. Home of the Lot-O-Burger and the “best banana split in the county,” the restaurant has been part of the Stone County landscape since 1960, according to its website.
The Frosty Mug sits on a third of an acre at 514 S. Magnolia Drive. In addition to the 1,100-square-foot building, new owners can keep the restaurant or turn the property and business into something new.
The Coastal Perspective listing said the location would be great for any commercial venture, from a bar to a dentist. But the price includes the business and building: all appliances, equipment, furnishings, signage, inventory and the business name.
The Whistle Stop Cafe
Coastal Perspective also listed the Whistle Stop Cafe, at 127 N. Magnolia Drive. The 2,342-square-foot building is going for $400,000.
“Patronized by locals, Flint Creek visitors, and customers from all over, this business has been thriving for 21 years,” according to the listing. “This business comes with an established customer base, all equipment, and all inventory needed to continue business as usual.”
Rowell said the key to successful businesses like the Whistle Stop and Frosty Mug was the variety and personality they offer. “I think people enjoy visiting rural communities,” she said. “They’re looking for something unique and we have some really great, lovely places here and a unique vibe.”
