Owners of MS Coast po-boy shop are selling after nearly 30 years. ‘This is like our baby.’

Waveland restaurateurs are ready to pass the baton.

Cathy Wellman and Michelle Schmitt have decided to sell The Lunch Box, a Highway 90 restaurant they have owned and operated for nearly three decades.

“We’re not closing, we’re just selling,” Wellman stressed.

She and co-owner Michelle Schmitt said they were ready to retire, but would stick around until the business was sold and promised to teach the new owners everything – especially the roast beef po-boy recipe.

Wellman said she would miss every part of owning The Lunch Box, but it’s time to hang up her apron.

“I’m gonna be 72 in October and I’m tired,” said Wellman. “She’s in her 60’s and I’m in my 70’s. This is like our baby, but I’m ready to stop.”

Monday’s Facebook announcement that the business was up for sale came as a surprise to roast beef poboy devotees and muffuletta aficionados across the Coast. Within hours of posting, hundreds had either expressed their disappointment or shared the news on social media.

“It made us feel good to see so many people cared,” Wellman said.

The Lunch Box is open for lunch Monday through Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (starting June 19) and is located at 210 Hwy. 90 Ste. A in Waveland.
