These maps show how gas prices skyrocketed on the Mississippi Coast in a matter of days
Gas prices averaging around $4 per gallon for regular unleaded is a new normal — for now — in Mississippi, a state with traditionally cheap fuel when compared to the rest of the United States.
The rising fuel costs skyrocketed quickly in the Magnolia State, with prices in some South Mississippi counties topping $4 ahead of the state average.
Mississippi and the US set a new record for gas prices in March, with the last records being set in July 2008.
And while gas prices have declined in the last week, these charts show how fast Mississippians faced drastic price increases at the pump.
The maps, powered by data from AAA, show that prices began to skyrocket quickly in the first week of March, after essentially remaining flat or seeing a gradual increase from December 2021 to the start of March 2022.
Prices neared — and topped — $4 per gallon in a matter of days.
Pearl River County saw the most dramatic increase, the maps show. Check out the data from the six southern Mississippi counties here, which are:

The average price of a gallon of gas in Mississippi was $3.93 on Sunday a 7-cent decrease from the week before.
