The Mississippi Coast lacks grocery store options. Which chain should come after ALDI?
Mississippi Coast residents have long begged and pleaded for grocery store options from Bay St. Louis.
Few stores exist outside of the Walmart Supercenter stores and new Walmart neighborhood markets that have popped up in several cities, including Gulfport, Biloxi, D’Iberville and Ocean Springs.
There are some local options that residents love, including Rouses locations in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties, and Jerry Lee’s in Pascagoula and other cities on the east side of the Coast.
Dollar General has also opened up some markets, and Froogels is a local favorite. There are also a few Winn Dixie locations, including in Gulfport and Long Beach.
South Mississippi is lucky to have a small but solid list of local markets that sell Mediterranean and Mexican grocery items. Lee’s Supermarket near East Biloxi also has staples for cooking Vietnamese and Thai cuisine, including offering supplies to celebrate Lunar New Year.
ALDI’s announcement of a new $4 million store in Ocean Springs was met with hundreds of positive comments from residents.
Still, the Coast is missing some staples found in cities like New Orleans, Mobile and Jackson. We have no Kroger, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Costco or Publix.
We want to hear from you. Aside from ALDI, what other grocery stores would you like to see in South Mississippi.
Vote now in our online survey. You can select up to three options before you submit. This is not a scientific poll, so you can vote as many times as you’d like to show your favorite grocery store some love.
