Gulfport eye clinic ranked among the top same-day surgery centers in the U.S.
A surgical center in Gulfport is one of the best ambulatory, or one-day surgery centers, in America, according to “Newsweek” magazine.
Hogan Eye Clinic and Surgical Center, 351 Cowan Road, is one of four surgery centers that made the list in the state and the only one in South Mississippi.
Newsweek used data research from Statista to analyze the surgery centers’ performance and conducted surveys of nurses, therapists, physicians, surgeons and administrators for the best surgery centers in their state, according to the criteria.
More than 4,600 centers in 29 states were analyzed and the list was narrowed to the top 470.
Christopher Hogan, MD, an ophthalmology specialist with 30 years of experience, operates the Gulfport clinic that was the first in South Mississippi dedicated exclusively to eye surgery.
Originally from Pennsylvania, he graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1991. He chose to open a clinic in South Mississippi, he said, more because it is a community than a beach town, he said.
Being named by “Newsweek” shows that the clinic in Gulfport can “deliver a level of quality care that measures up to a national distinction,” he said.
He specializes in treatment and surgery for eye diseases. Other specialists who provide care at the clinic about once each month are Dr. Adham Al-Hariri, eyelid specialist; Dr. Edward Langlow, glaucoma specialist, and Dr. Stanislav Zhuk, vitreoretinal specialist
Hogan said he and the 20 members of his surgical and clinical staff work to keep costs down and protect patients from out-of-pocket costs. They use advanced technology only when it has proven benefits, he said, to keep down high deductibles and co-pays.
Being small, they also were able to respond rapidly to COVID-19 to protect patients and staff, he said.
