Sun Herald is moving to ‘digital Saturdays’ this week

A big change is coming to the Sun Herald this week.

We announced plans months ago to stop producing a printed paper on Saturdays.

Those plans start this week. There will be no print edition this Saturday, Jan. 18.

Instead, the newspaper on Saturdays will be online only.

Every day, we produce a product called the “e-edition.” This is an exact replica of the printed paper, but in an electronic format easily digestible on a phone, tablet or computer.

The e-edition, and our website, will replace the printed Saturday paper going forward.

We are also making enhancements to our Friday and Sunday print products as part of the move to digital Saturdays. On Fridays, we’ll add several “good news” themed pages called “Uplift.” We’ll also add a page of puzzles. On Sundays, we’ll publish the comics and puzzles from Saturday — in addition to Sunday’s.

All of these changes ensure we can keep serving the readers of South Mississippi.

Providing the news that’s essential to your life, be it breaking news about hurricanes, coverage of our local governments and casinos, sports and watchdog journalism that holds public officials accountable, remains our primary focus, in print and online.

Why are we doing away with the Saturday print edition? More and more of our customers are engaging with our local journalism online. Fewer and fewer people are reading print. This is not only a trend in South Mississippi, it is a widespread trend in the media industry, and in fact, all industries. As reader habits change, we are adapting.

There are also more ways to connect with the Sun Herald beyond print. You can sign up for our email newsletters to get breaking news as it happens, or a daily round-up in the morning or afternoon. Also follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for Coast news tailored for social media, such as our new video series Color on the Coast. Sports reporter Patrick Magee also offers up-to-the-minute sports scores and updates on his Twitter account, @CoastCoverage.

To get the digital paper on Saturdays, you need to be sure that your digital account is activated. You can take care of that at our website, sunherald.com, or we have people who can help you on the phone. Also, there’s no extra cost associated with the e-edition. All our digital offerings are included as part of the cost of print subscription.

If you have thoughts or questions about these changes, shoot me an email at bmkaplan@sunherald.com.

As we make this transition together, we want to thank you for your loyalty and investment in the Sun Herald. We are dedicated to providing this community, one we care deeply about, with independent, fact-based news and solutions for local businesses that help us all thrive and grow for many years to come. This is another step to make progress towards that goal.
