Keep those Christmas lights up longer. This utility bill will cost a little less in 2020.

Lower electric bills are coming next year for customers of Mississippi Power.

Average residential customers using 1,000 kWh per month will save $5.71 on their monthly bills and $68.52 for the year. The savings begin with the January bills.

Three actions, two that will require approval by the Mississippi Public Service Commission, will account for the reduction:

Mississippi Power requested from the PSC a reduction of $6 million for retail customers, which encompasses all areas of the company’s business. For a residential customer using 1,000 kWh of energy per month, this is 68 cents less per month.

In the annual fuel filing with the PSC for the anticipated cost of producing power, the company requested a reduction of $24 million. This will save $2.86 each month for the average retail customer.

The third factor reducing customer bills is a surcharge of $2.17 that will roll off effective in January. The surcharge was permitted in the company’s 2018 agreement with the Public Utilities Staff in the Performance Evaluation Plan docket.

In 2019, average residential customers paid $4.14 less a month thanks to lower costs of energy used to make electricity.

“We’re excited to be able to pass these savings on to our customers,” said Jeff Shepard, Mississippi Power spokesman. “Our employees work every day to safely deliver reliable, affordable energy to the customers and communities we serve.”
