Fans of University of Alabama and University of Georgia football teams will be able to buy championship T-shirts at Shoe Station and Academy Sports stores in those states right after one of the teams wins Monday’s National Championship.
Shoe Station ordered 5,600 T-shirts. About an equal number have Alabama and Georgia as the winner, a gamble, the company said, since only one will win.
Store managers and employees at Shoe Station will be listening to the game. If Alabama wins, 10 of the chain’s 20 stores will re-open as soon as the game ends, including the two locations in Mobile, and will remain open until midnight or until the T-shirts sell out. If Georgia wins, 6 of the 20 stores will re-open. Shoe Station has locations across five states, and neither of the Mississippi stores in D’Iberville and Hattiesburg are among those that will reopen.
The shirts with the losing team’s logos will be returned to the vendor and Shoe Station is out the cost of the printing and materials.
“Yes, we consider predictions when buying for an event like this,” said Shoe Station President Brent Barkin. “However, anything can happen when it comes down to a game with this much hype. The bigger question is how many Alabama fans we have in certain stores versus Georgia fans in other stores. That can be more difficult to estimate.”
Alabama is a 4-point favorite.
Boxes of Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs National Championship products are arriving at Academy Sports + Outdoors. If Alabama wins, all 16 Academy stores in Alabama, including two in Mobile, immediately will reopen and stay open until the National Championship shirts, hats and novelty items are sold. If Georgia wins all 16 Academy Sports stores in Georgia will reopen and begin selling UGA championship products.
Academy Sports stores in Gulfport and D’Iberville will begin selling Alabama Championship products once stores open Tuesday morning if Alabama wins.
Last year Clemson fans celebrated by buying shirts right after their team won while the Alabama T-shirts were returned.
