On Instagram, Cafe Du Monde most popular restaurant in Louisiana -- and America

NEW ORLEANS -- It's not uncommon to walk past Cafe Du Monde in downtown New Orleans and see customers sipping on a cafe au lait, munching on a beignet and snapping an artsy photo on their smartphone.

In fact, it's become a ritual of sorts -- for tourists and residents alike -- to post an obligatory beignet photo on Instagram.

Maybe it's the powdered sugar. Maybe it's the chocolate milk. Maybe it's the pigeons anxiously awaiting the drop of crumbs.

Regardless of reason, Cafe Du Monde has a new distinction -- it's the most Instagrammed location in Louisiana, and the most Instagrammed restaurant in America.

An interactive graphic published by Time ranked the shop as location most-shared on Instagram in the state of Louisiana. The data, exclusively provided to Time from Instagram, was derived from an online map that geotags locations of photos shared different locations in all 50 states.

Mississippi's most-shared spot was Mississippi State University's campus.

Instagram's data deduced that Cafe Du Monde was one of the most photographed places in America.

Food and Wine used the data to deduce that Cafe Du Monde was, in fact, the most photographed restaurant in America.

Instagram has over 400 million users worldwide. More than 100 million users reside in the United States.
