It’s never too early for a Dong Phuong king cake, as the wildly popular New Orleans bakery is making a Christmas version of these delectable delights, and they’ll be available at Waveland Pharmacy in South Mississippi.

Pharmacist Rudy Letellier said his phone hasn’t stopped ringing since he announced Monday on Facebook that he’ll be stocking Dong Phuong’s Christmas king cakes

“Everyone’s calling up here,” Letellier said Wednesday. Inquiring minds want to know just when Christmas king cakes will arrive.

Letellier found out only recently that he’ll be able to get the scarce Christmas treat. He’ll drive to New Orleans in the mornings to pick up his Christmas king cakes and have them available around 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19-20, Dec. 22, and on Christmas Eve. The pharmacy is closed on Sundays and Tuesdays.

He said Dong Phuong sells the Christmas cakes at only a few locations. They’ll be available at the pharmacy in traditional cinnamon and cream-filled. Dong Phuong will start selling the king cakes Dec. 19 in New Orleans, a text message from the bakery said.

The New Orleans bakery starts selling Mardi Gras king cakes in early January, but Letellier hasn’t been able to get the exact date yet. He plans to stock those again this year, too.

People drive from Florida and Tennessee for Dong Phuong king cakes, he said. A line forms outside his pharmacy before it opens. The king cakes are gone within an hour.

“We have some people, they go crazy over them,” he said. “It’s very different from any king cake made. It’s flaky. It’s not dry. They do something different with their dough.”
